Some techniques just feel like magic - and the drop shadow technique (also called faux embossing) is one of them. It’s quick, it’s easy, and it packs a serious wow factor. If you’ve ever wanted that embossed look without actually embossing your cardstock, this is the trick you’ll want to try right away.

Today on the blog I’m sharing three cards using this technique, including a Christmas card, an elegant wedding card, and a soft thank-you card. If you love rubber stamping techniques, you’re definitely going to want to bookmark this one.

Drop-Shadow Holly Christmas Card

This Christmas card shows off the drop shadow technique beautifully. I started with Crumb Cake cardstock and stamped the holly leaves and berries in white ink. After letting it dry completely (because patience may be a virtue, but my heat tool is my BFF), I stamped again - slightly offset - using Garden Green for the leaves and Cherry Cobbler for the berries. The result looks like embossed holly, but without an embossing folder.

I repeated the same trick on the large “Christmas” sentiment. The word almost glows off the cardstock! A tiny “cheer” banner punched with the Three Banners Punch and a bit of Red & White Baker’s Twine finished the card with a classic holiday feel.

Elegant Drop-Shadow Wedding Card

If you want a card that whispers elegance, this one’s your girl. Using Crumb Cake cardstock again, I stamped the flowers in white ink, let them dry, and stamped over the top with Early Espresso. This neutral palette is simple but incredibly classy - perfect for weddings, anniversaries, or anything that calls for a soft, timeless look.

I used the Everyday Arches Dies for the sentiment and added a little Early Espresso Linen Thread and a few Earthy Matte Dots. Sometimes a limited color palette does the heavy lifting, and this one definitely delivers.

Petal Pink thank-you card with floral images stamped using the drop shadow technique in white and Calypso Coral. Embossed background, sentiment punched into a banner shape, and two strands of braided trim tucked behind.

Drop-Shadow Thank-You Card

This soft and sweet thank-you card uses Petal Pink cardstock and features a floral design from the 12 Days of Crafting Advent Calendar. I stamped the images in white and then in Calypso Coral for that perfect shadow effect.

For the sentiment, I stamped in Calypso Coral and created banner ends using the edge of the Modern Hexagon Punch. The background is embossed with the Gathering Leaves Embossing Folder, and I tucked two strands pulled from the Petal Pink Braided Trim behind the sentiment for a soft, delicate touch.
