Easy Card Making Technique: Faux Silk

10/15/2024

Use the easy faux silk card making technique to add texture to your handmade cards. You'll love how easy these cards are to make!
I love easy card making techniques - especially ones that only use supplies that I already have in my house. So the faux silk technique is perfect! It's so easy and all you need is some patterned paper, white tissue paper, and an adhesive sheet or glue stick.

I shared how to do this technique during this week's Stamp with Me Tuesday YouTube Live. If you missed it, you can catch the replay below. I also have lots more photos and the complete supply lists for these cards. So, on y go! Let's get stamping.

Video Tutorial for this Easy Card Making Technique

Here's the step-by-step video tutorial for this easy card making technique. I also made a card with the faux silk technique that I don't have photos of!

Easy Handmade Christmas Card

The faux silk technique is perfect for making easy handmade cards like this Christmas card! Start with a piece of patterned paper. Papers with bold colors and lots of contrast work the best. I used the Reindeer Days Designer Series Paper from Stampin' Up!®️ for this holiday card.

Cover the patterned paper with an adhesive sheet or glue stick. Crumple up a piece of white tissue paper and then un crumple it without taking out all of the wrinkles.

Lay the sticky side of the patterned paper onto the tissue paper. Push down the patterned paper to get it to stick. Then, turn it over and go over the top with a bone folder to make sure that it is stuck when all over.

I finished this handmade holiday card by cutting a piece of Real Red cardstock with the Greetings of the Season dies. Then, I stamped the sentiment on a piece of white cardstock and die-cut it with the Christmas Labels.

Such a quick and easy Christmas card!

Hello Pumpkin!

I couldn't find my white tissue paper when I made this hello pumpkin card. So, I used a piece of ivory tissue paper. You can see how the slight color change affects how much you can see the patterned paper through the tissue paper.

I used the Regal Winter Designer Series Paper from Stampin' Up!®️ for this card. I layered it on Cajun Craze cardstock.

For the focal point on this card, I started by die-cutting some Very Vanilla cardstock with the Spotlight on Nature dies. Then, I stamped some pumpkins from the Scenic Pumpkin Patch stamp set in Cajun Craze and Wild Wheat on the die-cut circle. (Did you see the other cards that I made with this fabulous stamp set last week?)

For the sentiment, I used the More Than Autumn stamp set and dies. I stamped the hello with Wild Wheat. Then, I die-cut the word pumpkin three times from Cajun Craze cardstock. I layered them to create a thick die-cut.

Thank You Card with the Faux Silk Technique

I shared how to do the faux silk technique using patterned paper, but you can also do it with stamped images! I made this handmade thank you card with the Autumn Laves stamp set.

I started by stamping the leaves in Pumpkin Pie, Crushed Curry, Real Red, and Pecan Pie ink on Basic White. Then, I did the rest of the card following the same steps as above.

To finish this card, I layered the faux silk piece on Pumpkin Pie cardstock. I wrapped it with a piece of Crumb Cake Baker's Twine. Then, I cut the label with the Autumn Leaves dies and stamp the sentiment with Pecan Pie and Early Espresso ink. I added the label to the card front with Stampin' Dimensionals.

I finished this card (and the one above) by embellishing it with a few Faux Glass Dots. I love the matte finish of these clear dots!

Thank you! True confessions - I often just put a piece of white cardstock inside my cards without decorating it.
