Stuck on What to Make? Try This Card SketchYou know that feeling when you want to sit down and make something, but your brain just… stalls?

Same.

That’s exactly why I love a good card sketch. It gives you just enough structure to get started, but still leaves plenty of room to play with your stamps, dies, and paper.

This week’s sketch is one of those go-to, use-it-over-and-over layouts. It’s clean, it’s simple, and it works with pretty much anything in your stash – which also makes it perfect for trying out new Stampin’ Up!® products without overthinking it.

Make sure you scroll all the way through – I’ve got a free downloadable project sheet with all the measurements so you can recreate these at your own pace.

A quick walkthrough of the sketch and how these cards come together.

The Card Sketch – Simple Layout, Endless Options

This sketch starts with a 4" x 5 1/4" layer in a light color like Basic White or a soft neutral.
  • Stamp your sentiment in the center
  • Add four circles (about 1 3/4") – one in each corner
  • Decorate each circle with a small image (stamped, die cut, or both)

That’s it. Seriously. That’s the whole thing.

And once you make one, you’ll immediately start thinking of ten more ideas.

Handmade butterfly card using the All Aflutter bundle from Stampin’ Up!®. Features Barely Blush cardstock and Crisp Cantaloupe ink with a clean card sketch layout. Perfect for cardmaking, rubber stamping, and simple elegant designs.

Soft Butterflies with the All Aflutter Bundle

This one is soft, simple, and just really pretty.
I used the All Aflutter bundle and went with Barely Blush for the base layer – one of the new 2026–2028 In Colors. It gives everything that light, almost airy feel.

The butterflies are two-step stamped – Basic Black for the outline and Crisp Cantaloupe for the fill. Then I punched them out with the coordinating punch and added them to the circles.

The sentiment is stamped in Basic Black with a little Crisp Cantaloupe for “friend,” which just ties everything together without getting busy.

This is a great example of letting the stamping do the work while keeping the layout clean.

Bright Summer Vibes with Splash and Relax

This one completely flips the mood. Same sketch… totally different feel.

I kept the background white-on-white for that clean look, then added all the color with die cuts from the Splash and Relax bundle (this will be our June Online Card Class – and yes, you’re going to want it).

Instead of stamping, this card leans heavily on the dies, which is a great reminder that this sketch isn’t just for stamped images.

I used:
  • Coastal Cabana
  • Lemon Lime Twist
  • Melon Mambo
  • Pumpkin Pie
  • Daffodil Delight

The sentiment is stamped in Secret Sea and sits right in the center, grounding all those bright, fun elements.
This one just feels like summer in card form.
Bright summer handmade card using the Splash and Relax bundle from Stampin’ Up!®. Features die cut flip flops, sunglasses, and drink elements on a clean white card sketch. Fun cardmaking idea using bold colors and simple layout.
Soft floral handmade card using the Scalloped Blooms dies from Stampin’ Up!®. Features pastel cardstock flowers and a clean card sketch layout. Great for cardmaking, paper crafting, and thinking of you cards.

Soft Floral Twist with Scalloped Blooms Dies

Alright… this is where I broke the “rules” a little.

Instead of circles, I swapped them out for flowers using the Scalloped Blooms dies. This one might be my favorite version.

Same concept, same placement… just a different shape.

The flowers are cut from:
  • Crisp Cantaloupe
  • Barely Blush
  • Fresh Freesia
  • Lemon Lolly

With Soft Sea Foam leaves and Basic Beige centers.
The sentiment is stamped simply in the center – “Thinking of You” – and that’s all it needs.

This is a great reminder that a card template doesn’t have to be followed exactly. Once you understand the layout, you can start swapping shapes and making it your own.
