If you’ve ever sat down to make a card and immediately thought, “I have no idea where to start,” this is for you.

A good card sketch gives you a plan. It takes away the overthinking and lets you actually enjoy the process – which, let’s be honest, is the whole point of cardmaking.

This week’s sketch is simple, versatile, and perfect for using your patterned paper. You only need two coordinating patterns and a focal point, and you’re good to go.

Make sure to read all the way through to see all four cards, watch the video tutorial, and grab the free downloadable project sheet with all the measurements.

  • Patterned paper strip: 1" x 5"

Blue floral hello card using A Round of Hellos stamp set and Homemade Sweetness Designer Series Paper from Stampin’ Up!®. Easy card sketch idea with circle focal point.

Classic Blue Floral Hello

This first card keeps things simple with a limited color palette.

I used the A Round of Hellos stamp set with the Homemade Sweetness Designer Series Paper. The key here is choosing two patterns that coordinate but still have contrast – I went with a small floral and a check pattern, both in Misty Moonlight and White.

For the focal point, I stamped the flower in Granny Apple Green and Misty Moonlight, then added the circular sentiment around it. I punched it out with the 2 3/8" Circle Punch and layered it right over the seam of the patterned paper.

Soft & Neutral Birthday with Texture

This card takes the same sketch and softens it way down with a neutral palette and added texture.

I used the Cutest Crew stamp set with the new Painted Patterns Designer Series Paper in Gray Granite.

Instead of using two pieces of patterned paper, I swapped one out for embossed cardstock. It adds interest without introducing a bold pattern.

I also changed the focal shape to a rounded rectangle using a new punch coming in May – and I love this thing. It gives a softer look while still changing things up from the original sketch.

Love You Card with Die-Cut Toadstools

This card is a great reminder that you don’t have to use a stamp set exactly as intended.

I used the Sweet Bugs stamp set and Cute as a Bug Designer Series Paper, but skipped the bugs completely and used the Sweet Bugs dies to cut two toadstools from Basic Beige and Cajun Craze cardstock.

I added subtle splatter using a Water Painter and white ink to give the tops a little texture.

Everything is layered onto an Old Olive circle punched with the 2 3/8" Circle Punch, tying it back to the sketch while still giving it a completely different feel.

Simple Soccer-Themed Card

This is the easiest of the four cards!

I used the Match Day stamp set with the A Wonderful Match Designer Series Paper and let that bold black and white contrast do the work.

The sentiment is stamped in black, then I stamped the soccer ball over it in Smoky Slate so it adds detail without taking over.

I punched it with the 1 7/8" Circle Punch and layered it onto a black 2" Circle Punch layer.

Clean, graphic, and quick.
