Sometimes you just need a plan.

Not a complicated one. Not a “measure and cut 17 tiny pieces” kind of plan. Just a solid card sketch that works with whatever supplies you already have sitting on your table. This week’s card sketch is exactly that – quick, flexible, and perfect for showing off patterned paper without overthinking it.

I used this sketch to make four different handmade cards, and that’s my favorite part. Same layout, different vibe depending on the stamps and paper. Scroll down to see the sketch diagram, measurements, and four finished card ideas you can copy or customize.

Video Tutorial

In today’s video, I walk you through this simple card sketch and share tips for swapping patterned papers, stamps, and sentiments to make it work for any occasion.

Card Sketch + Measurements

This sketch is built around layered squares, making it ideal for patterned paper – especially designs that come in multiple scales.

Measurements:
  • Card Base: 4 1/4" x 11", scored at 5 1/2"
  • Cardstock Layer: 4" x 5 1/4"
  • Cardstock Layer 2: 3 1/8" x 3 1/8"
  • Patterned Paper Square (large): 4" x 4"
  • Patterned Paper Square (small): 3" x 3"
  • Additional white or vanilla cardstock for stamping and die cutting
Additional supplies: stamps, ink, adhesive, embellishments (optional)

Valentine’s Day handmade card using the Bee My Valentine stamp set with Pretty in Pink and Cajun Craze cardstock and Squared Snippets patterned paper.

Bee My Valentine

This Valentine’s Day card uses the Bee My Valentine stamp set and coordinating punch paired with Squared Snippets Designer Series Paper. The color combo of Pretty in Pink and Cajun Craze came straight from the paper – and honestly, it’s not one I would have picked on my own, which is exactly why I love letting patterned paper lead the way.

The Squared Snippets patterned paper works especially well with this sketch because the patterns are already designed in both 4" x 4" and 3" x 3" squares. I stamped the bee in Darling Duckling and Cajun Craze, added hearts in Pretty in Pink and Cajun Craze, and finished it off with a sentiment punched using the 3 Banners Punch.

Floral You’re Amazing Card

This bright, happy card features the A Round of Hellos stamp set with Squared Snippets DSP. I stamped the flowers in Strawberry Slush and Daffodil Delight, cut them out, and layered them over the polka dot background for extra dimension.

The sentiment is stamped, trimmed into strips, and popped up with Stampin’ Dimensionals. This stamp set will be featured in the March Online Card Class, which you can register for – or earn free with a $100 order in February.

Cute handmade card using Sweet Bugs bundle and Cute as a Bug patterned paper with die-cut ants and a scene-style background.

This Handmade Card is as Cute as a Bug!

For this card, I switched gears and used Cute as a Bug Designer Series Paper with the Sweet Bugs bundle. The ants are die cut directly from the patterned paper using the coordinating dies.

One of my favorite things about this paper is the scene-style designs. They make it so easy to create a focal point without extra layering or stamping. I kept the front clean and stamped the sentiment on the inside so the little bugs could really shine.

Easy DIY Thank You Card

This thank you card is proof that simple can still be stunning. I paired Squared Snippets DSP with the Fabulous Sayings stamp set in Pretty in Pink and Cajun Craze again – because clearly I’m not over that combo yet.

The sentiment is stamped on white cardstock, punched with the 1 3/4" Circle Punch, and layered onto Cajun Craze punched with the 1 7/8" Circle Punch. The mix of polka dots and florals does all the heavy lifting here, making this a great go-to thank you card design.

The Fabulous Sayings stamp set was the January Product of the Month - but good news! - right now it's still available AND you can get it for $5 with a $75 order.
