If you’ve ever looked at an embossed background and thought, “It’s pretty… but it needs something,” today’s technique is about to become your new favorite.

This dry embossing and brayer technique adds depth, contrast, and just enough drama to make your handmade cards look polished and intentional – without adding complicated steps. We’re layering light ink, texture from an embossing folder, and then rolling a darker ink over the raised areas to make that pattern pop.

It’s simple. It’s bold. And it works with so many Stampin’ Up!® embossing folders and stamp sets.
Keep reading for the full tutorial video, four card samples, and grab the free downloadable project sheet with instructions so you can try it yourself.

How the Dry Embossing + Brayer Technique Works

Here’s the basic process:
  1. Lightly brayer a lighter ink color onto white cardstock. Don’t aim for full coverage – leave soft areas, streaks, and variation.
  2. Run the cardstock through an embossing folder.
  3. Brayer a darker coordinating ink over the raised texture.
  4. Watch the pattern come to life.

That darker ink only catches the raised embossed areas – which creates instant depth and contrast.

Cutest Crew + Eyelet 3D Embossing Folder

For this card, I used the brand-new Cutest Crew stamp set (coming March 3 as part of the Online Exclusives from Stampin’ Up!®).

I started by brayering Bubble Bath ink onto Basic White cardstock. I intentionally kept it uneven so there were lighter and darker areas. After embossing it with the Eyelet 3D Embossing Folder, I rolled Strawberry Slush ink over the top to highlight the raised pattern.

The contrast between the soft pink and the deeper red makes that eyelet texture stand out beautifully.

I stamped the three little birds in Strawberry Slush and colored them to create a trio of sweet red birds. The layered ribbon detail gives it just a little extra personality.

This one feels fresh, happy, and perfect for spring.

A Round of Hellos + All in a Row Embossing Folder

This bold color combo is a total mood booster.

I lightly brayered Pumpkin Pie ink onto white cardstock. Because I kept it light, it almost looks like a golden-yellow wash instead of full-strength orange.

After embossing it with the All in a Row Embossing Folder, I brayered Berry Burst over the raised plaid pattern. The deep berry catches the raised texture and creates a rich, almost fabric-like effect.

The circular “hello” sentiment from A Round of Hellos was stamped on Basic White and punched with the 2" Circle Punch. I layered it on Berry Burst cut with the Spotlight on Nature dies and added stamped flowers in Berry Burst, Daffodil Delight, and Pumpkin Pie.

Bright. Bold. And impossible to ignore.

Sunshine Vibes + Lovely Stripes Embossing Folder

This one shows how versatile the technique can be.

I started by brayering Pool Party ink onto white cardstock. Before embossing, I stamped small starbursts from the Sunshine Vibes stamp set in Pool Party right on top of the inked background.

Then I embossed it with the Lovely Stripes Embossing Folder and rolled Pretty Peacock over the top.

Because the folder has bold stripes, the darker ink creates dramatic vertical lines. The lighter Pool Party shows through between the stripes, and the stamped images peek through subtly in the background.

The layered “HELLO” sentiment in Pool Party, Lost Lagoon, and Pretty Peacock keeps the color story cohesive and clean.

This one is modern and graphic – I love it.

Barbecue Master + Pretty Pattern Embossing Folder

Let’s talk masculine cards.

For this background, I brayered Old Olive ink onto white cardstock and embossed it with the Beautiful Pattern Embossing Folder. Then I rolled Pretty Peacock over the raised pattern to create contrast.
The result feels textured and bold without being busy.

I stamped the grill from the brand-new BBQ Master stamp set (coming March 3 with the Online Exclusives), added Daffodil Delight flames, and cut it out with the coordinating dies. The focal image is layered onto Pretty Peacock cut with the Nested Essentials dies.

To add visual interest, I layered a diagonal panel of Old Olive in the lower corner with a strip of Pretty Peacock over it.

It’s strong. It’s layered. And it’s perfect for guys.
