Do you ever start blending ink and think, Well… we’ll see how this turns out? That’s exactly the energy behind today’s technique – and honestly, that’s what makes it fun.

Ink Blending Pop is a layered color technique where the background stays soft and a little unpredictable, while the stamped images come forward with bold, saturated color. The blended ink fades gently into the background, and then the images step up and steal the show.

If you like techniques that feel creative instead of controlled – where the results are never exactly the same twice – you’re going to love this one. I’m sharing three handmade cards using the Ink Blending Pop technique, plus tips to help you embrace the process and let the color do what it wants to do.

What Is the Ink Blending Pop Technique?

Ink Blending Pop is a technique built on contrast.

Here’s the basic process:
  1. Lightly blend multiple ink colors across your card front using blending brushes.
  2. Stamp your images over the blended background and heat emboss them.
  3. Use the same ink colors with a Water Painter or watercolor brush to add more saturated color inside the embossed images.
  4. Keep your brush fairly dry – this gives you intense color without flooding the paper.

The result is soft color in the background and bold, vibrant color that really pops inside your images. It’s a beautiful balance and works with florals, leaves, and even bold graphic stamps.

I walk you through the Ink Blending Pop technique step-by-step in the video below so you can see exactly how the layers come together and how much ink is just right.

Hello Friend Card with Rainbow Florals

This first card is a simple notecard with a rainbow of blended color and bold floral detail. I used the Lovely Arrangements stamp set, which is perfect for techniques like this because the images are open and easy to color.

For the background, I lightly blended Coastal Cabana, Lemon Lime Twist, Daffodil Delight, Peach Pie, Petunia Pop, and Melon Mambo across the card front. The goal here is soft transitions – nothing heavy or overworked.

Once the background was blended, I stamped the floral image and heat embossed it with black embossing powder. That black outline is what really makes this technique shine.

To create the “pop,” I went back in with the same ink colors using a Water Painter and added more saturated color inside each flower. I kept the brush fairly dry so the color stayed vibrant instead of washed out.

The sentiment was heat embossed in white on black cardstock and cut with the Lovely Arrangements dies. A few Basic Rhinestone Gems finished it off with just the right amount of sparkle.

This card is cheerful, colorful, and perfect when you want something bright without being overwhelming.

Hello Leaves with Fresh Botanicals

This second card uses the same Ink Blending Pop technique but with a completely different feel. It’s proof that changing embossing color can totally transform the look.

For this card, I used large leaf images from the Natural Botanicals stamp set. I blended Lemon Lime Twist, Granny Apple Green, Shy Shamrock, and Garden Green onto the card front for a fresh, nature-inspired background.

Instead of black embossing, I heat embossed the leaves with white embossing powder directly on the white cardstock. This gives the card a softer, airier look while still defining the images beautifully.

The sentiment was embossed in white on Garden Green cardstock and punched with a circle punch. I added a few Muted Palette Dots to finish the card without distracting from the clean design.

This is a great example of how Ink Blending Pop doesn’t have to be bold and bright – it can be calm and elegant too.

Floral Birthday Card

For the final card, I wanted to show how well this technique works with another floral stamp. This card uses the exclusive stamp set from the 2026 Virtual Card Retreat, and because the floral cluster is so large, I only needed to stamp the image twice to fill the space.

If you missed the Virtual Card Retreat, good news – you can still purchase the retreat box and watch all the replays.

I blended Daffodil Delight, Pumpkin Pie, Poppy Parade, and Berry Burst across the card front for a warm, vibrant background. After stamping the floral image, I heat embossed it with black embossing powder to keep the details crisp.

The sentiment was heat embossed in white on black cardstock and cut with the NEW Forever Florals dies, which are included in the Virtual Card Retreat and will be available separately as an online exclusive in March. I finished the card with Basic Rhinestone Gems for a touch of sparkle.

This card is bold, happy, and perfect for birthdays when you want something extra special.
