If you’ve ever admired the movement and rhythm of quilt patterns, you’re going to love this week’s stamping technique! The Bargello technique takes inspiration straight from quilting – but instead of fabric, we’re using patterned paper and cardstock. It’s the perfect way to use up those strips of patterned paper that you’ve been saving (or stashing in your scrap drawer!).

Today I’m showing you how to create the Bargello look in cardmaking with three different handmade card samples. You’ll see how you can make it bold as a background or smaller for a focal point – either way, it adds incredible texture and movement to your cards.

Video Tutorial for the Bargello Technique

Here’s the video tutorial where I walk you through the Bargello technique step by step. You’ll see how easy it is to adapt this quilting-inspired design to your cardmaking.

Gathering Moments Bargello Friendship Card

For this card, I went autumnal with the Gathering Moments stamp set and dies and the Gathering Together Specialty Designer Series Paper (coming September 3!). The paper has beautiful Cajun Craze and Early Espresso tones with touches of Champagne foil.

After creating my Bargello background, I layered on a die-cut leaf in Basic Beige, a rectangle of Early Espresso cardstock cut with the Textured Notes dies, and a sentiment stamped in Early Espresso. A bow of Early Espresso Linen Thread and Streaked Dots from the Autumn Toile suite finish it off with warmth and shimmer.

Thank You Bargello Card with Floral Charm DSP

Here, the Bargello technique takes center stage in a smaller panel, cut to 2 ¾” x 4”. I used the Floral Charm Designer Series Paper, layered on Pretty Peacock, and added it to a Berry Burst card base.

The sentiment, stamped in Pretty Peacock ink from the Charming Day stamp set, is punched with the 1 ¾” Circle Punch for a simple, clean finish. This shows how easy it is to adapt the Bargello look for smaller, statement-making layers.

Painterly Pears Bargello Friendship Card

For this softer design, I used the Painterly Pears Designer Series Paper paired with the Perfectly Pears stamp set. The Bargello panel is layered on Darling Duckling cardstock and added to a Secret Sea card base.

The sentiment is stamped in Secret Sea ink and punched with the 1 ¾” Circle Punch. To embellish, I added Low-Profile Sparkle Dots and a touch of Mossy Meadow and Gold ribbon for extra sparkle and dimension.
