If your patterned paper scraps are starting to take over your craft room, today’s technique is about to feel like a deep breath and a permission slip rolled into one.

This week’s Stamp with Me Tuesday is all about the Scrappy Quilt technique – a fun, forgiving way to turn leftover strips of patterned paper into a bold, quilt-inspired background for handmade cards. It’s the perfect mix of structure and freedom, which makes it ideal when you want something creative without a lot of measuring or overthinking.

If you’ve ever looked at your scraps and thought, I should use these someday, this is your sign. Keep reading to see three very different cards made with the same technique – and then try it with whatever paper is already on your table.

Watch the Scrappy Quilt Technique in Action

In this week’s video, I walk you through the Scrappy Quilt technique step by step, sharing tips for layout, balance, and making busy backgrounds look polished and intentional.

What Is the Scrappy Quilt Technique?

The Scrappy Quilt technique starts with a simple base and builds visual interest by layering patterned paper strips directly onto cardstock.

Here’s the basic process:
  • Cover a piece of cardstock completely with adhesive
  • Place one patterned paper strip diagonally across the panel
  • Add a second strip perpendicular to the first
  • Continue adding strips parallel to that second strip, butted up side by side
  • Trim the edges once the entire panel is covered

From there, you finish the card with your favorite stamps, sentiments, and embellishments.

There’s no “right” way to do this. The magic of this technique is that every card turns out a little different – even when you follow the same steps.

Supply List for this Thinking of you Card

Thinking of You Card with the Friendly Foliage Bundle

This first card is a soft, calming thinking of you card that really lets the scrappy quilt background shine without overwhelming the focal point.

I paired Peaceful Garden Designer Series Paper with the Friendly Foliage bundle, and I love how the greenery feels like it’s breaking out of the frame. The coordinating dies cut away along the foliage and the frame itself, creating a layered look that adds depth without a lot of bulk.

The color palette for this card is Secret Sea and Cloud Cover, which feels serene and timeless. I stamped the sentiment and cut it out using the Three Banners Punch, keeping the greeting clean and simple so the background stays the star.

St. Patrick’s Day Card with the Sweet Jar Stamp Set

For this card, I leaned fully into the scrappy part of the Scrappy Quilt technique.

I wanted an unapologetically green St. Patrick’s Day card, so I pulled out every patterned paper I had that was primarily green. I mixed strips from Turtle-Y Cute, Traditions of Christmas, Floral Impressions, Regals 6" x 6", Florals in Bloom, and Mixed-Up Patterns.

When you stick to a single color family, mixing patterns becomes easy and cohesive.

I added a piece of Old Olive cardstock die-cut with the Nested Essentials dies for the focal panel. The jar of shamrocks was stamped and punched using the Sweet Jar stamp set and punch, then popped up with Stampin’ Dimensionals.

The sentiment was stamped on a banner cut with the Three Banners Punch, tying it back to the first card while keeping the look playful and seasonal.

Birthday Card with the NEW Lovely Arrangements Bundle

This birthday card features the NEW Lovely Arrangements bundle, available starting January 6, and it’s such a beautiful way to dress up the Scrappy Quilt background.

I used Lovely Blooms Designer Series Paper for the quilted panel, then stamped the floral images in Secret Sea directly onto a Petal Pink patterned paper with a subtle design. After die-cutting the flowers, I layered them over a Cloud Cover panel cut with the Nested Essentials dies.

One of my favorite details on this card is the Secret Sea Open Weave Ribbon. I distressed it by gently pulling at the weave to give the edges a soft, wavy look that adds texture and movement.
