Bottle and Jar Tags for Special Hostesses

A couple of weeks ago, we celebrated my Mother-in-Law's birthday with a special meal at her house. I wanted the bottle of wine that we brought for the feast to be just as special as she is, so I made these birthday gift tags for the bottle that matched the card I'd made for her.

Fast forward to this weekend, my own Mother saw pictures of the tags and mentioned that she wanted to make similar tags for some home-canned items, but she needed directions. So, I decided to see what I could do to help her out.

Both of these tags are easy to make. Simply cut a rectangle of cardstock, score where you want the tag to flop over, and cut a hole.

Wine Bottle Tag:
  • Cut cardstock 3" x 7 3/4"
  • Score at 2 1/2" (on the 7 3/4" side)
  • Punch a hole with a 2 1/4" hole punch, or the second to the smallest circle in the Layering Circles dies
Canning Jar Tag:
  • Cut cardstock 3 3/4" x 7"
  • Score at 3 3/4" (on the 7" side)
  • Cut a hole using the largest circle from the Layering Circles dies

If you plan to make tags for canning jars, you'll want to be careful to choose a jar with a standard opening. You do not want to use a wide-mouth jar because there isn't enough of a difference in the size of the opening and the body of the jar. Your tag won't sit as nicely on a wide-mouth jar and might even slide right off!

For my canning jar tag, I used the From Our House to Yours stamp set from the 2019 Holiday Catalog. I paired it with the Woven Threads Designer Series Paper from the 2019-20 Annual Catalog. It would also look great with the Let It Snow! DSP from the Holiday Catalog for a Christmas/Winter look.

The original Wine bottle tags I made for my Mother-in-Law used retired stamps and dies, but this more general tag uses the Stitched Stars dies from the Holiday Catalog and the See a Silhouette DSP from the Annual Catalog.

I plan to make a few of these tags to keep on hand since bottles of wine are my standard hostess gift. They're easy to pop on at the last minute and it's so much more exciting to show up with a dressed up bottle than one still in the brown paper bag from the grocery store.
