How to Get Started Cardmaking with a New Stamp Set

Tips for using new stamps for the first time to create handmade cards. Sample cards using the Let's Set Sail bundle from Stampin' Up!
Don't you just LOVE getting a shipment of new Stampin' Up!® supplies? Or hitting your local craft store and grabbing a great deal? I know I do! It's so exciting and the new papers and stamps are so pretty and new. It makes my heart go pitter patter.

And then, you pull things out and your hear begins to sink. These new items are awesome, but how do I get started making something with them? Raise your hand if this has ever been you. I think we've all been there.

Friday, I did an impromptu YouTube live where I did an unboxing of new supplies that I received from Stampin' Up!  - the Your Biggest Fan and Let's Set Sail bundles. But, I didn't stop there. I shared tips for getting started with those new stamps and made a couple of cards on the spot. Full disclosure - one of them didn't turn out as well as I would have liked. You can see it below.

I apologize for the horrible echo on this video. I didn't know that it was happening during the live. I'm working on fixing this for my next live event.

Ok, on y go! Let's get stamping.

First Card with Your Biggest Fan

My first tip for using new stamps is to CASE the catalog. There is some debate over exactly what CASE stands for (I like copy and share everything), but the basic idea is the same - remake a card like you see in the catalog.

You can see this card on p. 68 of the January-June 2022 Mini Catalog. I had to change up a few things because I didn't have all of the products they used. That's ok! It doesn't have to be exact; it's just to help you successfully create a card while you try out your stamps.

Let's Set Sail Card Idea

My 2nd suggestion, is to make a card using a simple card sketch. This card is based on a card sketch I shared last summer. Using a card sketch is a great way to try out a new stamp set. You already have the basic layout; you just have to add your stamps and papers.

That being said, this Let's Set Sail card that I made during my YouTube Live did not turn out as I had hoped. I used the colors from the Waves of the Ocean Designer Series Paper pack, but they just didn't quit work together for this card.

Let's Set Sail Re-do

No fear though! I tried out my new stamps and the card was ok. I just needed to tweak the colors because I was happy with the layout. So, I tried it again - twice - and was much happier with the results both times.

I made one card in softer colors: Crumb Cake, Coastal Cabana, Calypso Coral, and Petal Pink. It's the same pack of Designer Series Paper, but I pulled out the Coastal Cabana piece instead of the Pacific Point piece.

Then, I decided to remake it and just change the color of the sailboat. So, instead of using Coastal Cabana and Calypso Coral for the sales, I used Real Red for a classic red, white, and blue color combination. I added some of the red and white baker's twine from the Fan Baker's Twine Assortment.
